How to Examine External Validity Within an Experiment∗
نویسنده
چکیده
A fundamental concern for researchers who design and analyze experiments is that the experimental result might not be externally valid in another context. Researchers have traditionally attempted to assess external validity by comparing data from an experiment to other data. In this essay, I use insights from my recent work to show researchers how to begin the examination of external validity internally, within the data from a single experiment. My insights rely on overlooked information and minimal assumptions. ∗I thank Ljubica Ristovska, Rae Staben, and Matthew Tauzer for excellent research assistance. متن کاملThe External Validity of Laboratory Experiments : Qualitative rather than Quantitative Effects
Laboratory experiments are used to address a wide variety of questions within economics, including whether behavior is consistent with the predictions and assumptions of theory and how various mechanisms and institutions affect the behavior of economic agents (see Roth 1987 for an overview). The experimental laboratory has become an integral part of the field of economics and a productive dialo...
متن کاملProgram Evaluation and Research Designs∗
This chapter provides a selective review of some contemporary approaches to program evaluation. One motivation for our review is the recent emergence and increasing use of a particular kind of “program” in applied microeconomic research, the so-called Regression Discontinuity (RD) Design of Thistlethwaite and Campbell (1960). We organize our discussion of these various research designs by how t...
متن کاملExternal Validity in a Stochastic World
We examine the generalizability of internally valid estimates of causal effects in a fixed population over time when that population is subject to aggregate shocks. This temporal external validity is shown to depend upon the distribution of the aggregate shocks and the interaction between these shocks and the casual effects. We show that returns to investment in agriculture, small and medium en...
